Our Story

In 2016, Danielle and Hannah hiked 2,189 miles from Georgia to Maine along the Appalachian Trail to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention. On the trail, the friends were known to fellow hikers by their trail names, Sunshine and Moonshine. They were commonly referred to as the Shine Sisters for bringing light to topics too often hidden in the darkness. In addition to raising nearly $11,000 for suicide prevention, they created the social media account @hikingmiles4smiles to initiate conversations about mental health and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illnesses.

Though they have traded in their tent for life under a roof, their passions for the outdoors and for suicide prevention continue to grow. In 2018, they founded The Shine Foundation, a non-profit organization, to promote mental health education in public schools.

Hannah Chmura

Co-Founder
Vice President, Treasurer, Clerk

Hannah’s passion for mental health advocacy stems from her experiences with loved ones struggling with their mental health. As a behavioral neuroscience major at Connecticut College, she explored the physical reality of mental illnesses and became increasingly frustrated by the stigma surrounding mental health that prevents so many people from reaching important resources. While sharing her story on the Appalachian Trail, she realized everyone knows someone affected by mental illness, yet most people are hesitant to talk about it. Hannah is dedicated to improving mental health awareness and education in schools so that young people feel comfortable talking about mental health and are equipped to support their peers.
